Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez won New York’s 14th District, according to the AP call published by Fox News. She will return alongside a new group of socialists whose campaigns challenged the Democratic establishment from within its own strongholds.

amNewYork’s local election report independently confirms the result from unofficial city Board of Elections returns. Ocasio-Cortez defeated Republican and Conservative candidate Diamant Hysenaj in a district covering the eastern Bronx and north-central Queens. She appeared on both the Democratic and Working Families lines.

NPR identifies five DSA-backed newcomers: Melat Kiros, Chris Rabb, Donavan McKinney, Claire Valdez and Darializa Avila Chevalier. They join Ocasio-Cortez and Rashida Tlaib, the organization’s existing House members.

Ocasio-Cortez also has an existing collaboration with Delia Ramirez on public housing, one of the policy areas running through the newcomers’ campaigns.

The incoming members reached Congress by different routes. Kiros defeated longtime incumbent Diana DeGette in Colorado’s primary, while Darializa Avila Chevalier unseated Adriano Espaillat in New York. Rabb and Valdez won open seats. These were victories inside Democratic territory, not five seats taken from Republicans.

The first choice is the speaker

NPR reported on election night that none of the incoming DSA-endorsed members had committed to supporting Hakeem Jeffries for House speaker. No negotiated bloc or shared condition for those votes had been established in that account.

Their bargaining position will depend on how many votes the Democratic leadership needs and whether the members act together. The five victories increase their numbers without settling those decisions.

A housing bill already connects the offices

Ocasio-Cortez’s housing proposals also address the balance of power in private rentals. Her platform backs legal counsel in eviction cases and restrictions on rejecting applicants because they use rental assistance. Repairs to public buildings, expansion of public ownership and protection against displacement are separate interventions in a market that gives landlords leverage over tenants’ daily lives.

Her employment program proposes a federal jobs guarantee with a living wage, healthcare and leave. The listed work includes caregiving, construction, parks and environmental conservation. Public employment would give workers another route to an income while supplying services that cannot be sustained simply by waiting for private investors to find them profitable.

Ramirez’s office lists an August 2026 reintroduction of the Green New Deal for Public Housing with Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders. That bill would direct investment toward repairs to existing public homes and union work, placing both the residents’ living conditions and the renovation workforce inside one legislative project.
