China has nominated senior public health official Song Li to become the next director-general of the World Health Organization, bringing Beijing into a leadership contest that will shape the institution after Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus completes his second term.

Song has experience in maternal and child health, international cooperation and epidemic response, according to the Associated Press. The WHO executive board is expected to narrow the field of candidates before a final election at the World Health Assembly in May 2027.

The nomination reflects an increasingly consequential contest over who influences international institutions. Global health is not only a technical field: access to vaccines, surveillance systems, intellectual property and emergency financing all bear on the ability of poorer countries to protect their populations.

China's participation also invites scrutiny of the actual policies candidates will support. The key questions for the Global South are whether the next WHO leader can strengthen public health systems, improve equitable access to medicines and give developing countries a meaningful voice in decisions.

Song has been nominated, not elected. Other candidates are competing for the office, and no outcome should be assumed before the selection process has concluded.
