Morena lawmaker meets Diego Ruzzarin to discuss defense of Mexico’s sovereignty

Morena federal deputy Alfonso Ramírez Cuéllar has announced a meeting with political commentator Diego Ruzzarin to discuss strategies for defending Mexico’s national sovereignty. The legislator cast the conversation in explicitly social terms: independence, unity and a national project built around the people.
In an October 8 post on X, Ramírez Cuéllar said the two had met to discuss “strategies to defend our national sovereignty.” He added that Mexico’s independence is strengthened through unity, social justice and a national project that places the people at its center.
A photograph published with the announcement shows the two alongside other attendees in front of a Mexican flag. The post did not disclose a written agreement, a proposed bill, or a formal political alliance. It was an announcement of talks, not evidence that a new policy had been adopted.
The meeting brings together a prominent figure in Morena’s congressional ranks and Ruzzarin, whose political commentary has helped bring debates about power, capitalism and national independence to wide online audiences.
The subject is especially timely. This week President Claudia Sheinbaum publicly criticized the history of intervention by United States agencies in Mexico, saying her administration has been compelled to defend national sovereignty. Her remarks and Ramírez Cuéllar’s meeting are separate developments; the lawmaker did not say that any specific U.S. agency or security dispute was discussed with Ruzzarin.
Ramírez Cuéllar also recently met Sheinbaum in the National Palace to discuss his broader legislative agenda. His encounter with Ruzzarin now places the language of sovereignty and social justice into a public conversation involving both elected officials and political media.
The central political question is what follows. National independence cannot be measured by a photograph alone. It must also be judged by whether workers, communities and elected institutions gain a greater say over economic and security decisions affecting the country.
For now, the verified news is straightforward: Ramírez Cuéllar says he and Ruzzarin discussed defending Mexico’s sovereignty, and he has publicly linked that cause to unity and social justice. No concrete commitment from the meeting has yet been announced.
