UNESCO warned on 13 October 2026 that fees and paywalls keep useful research out of reach of doctors, teachers and policymakers. Its Open Solutions initiative, running from 2026 to 2030, promotes Diamond Open Access, with no fees for authors or readers.


This fictional Paper Republic cartoon satirizes the gap between a free preview and meaningful access to knowledge.
