China is rapidly becoming Cuba’s most important energy partner as the Caribbean nation struggles through its worst electricity crisis in decades. Facing massive blackouts, fuel shortages, and growing pressure from the US blockade, Havana has turned increasingly toward Chinese solar technology, financing, and infrastructure support to stabilize the national grid. Recent reports show China has supplied more than 1 gigawatt of photovoltaic equipment to Cuba and helped finance dozens of new solar parks across the island.
According to Reuters and the Financial Times, Cuba installed over 1,000 megawatts of solar generation capacity in roughly a year, with Chinese companies directly assisting in construction and deployment. More than 45 solar parks are already operational, while Cuba aims to build over 90 by 2028.
The push comes as US sanctions and threats against oil shipments from Venezuela and Mexico severely worsened Cuba’s fuel crisis. In some regions, blackouts reportedly reached 20 to 22 hours per day.
China has also donated thousands of smaller photovoltaic systems for hospitals, schools, isolated homes, and essential infrastructure. Cuban officials say the long-term goal is energy sovereignty through renewables and reduced dependence on imported fossil fuels.
