Bernie Sanders and the Boundary Between Progressive Reform and Anti-Imperialism

Bernie Sanders occupies an unusual position in U.S. foreign policy: he is one of the Senate’s most persistent critics of Israeli military operations and arms transfers, yet he has spent decades operating inside a political system whose basic military alliances he has never sought to dismantle wholesale. That contradiction is more useful than either calling him an antiwar radical or reducing him to an imperialist caricature.
His Israel record has moved sharply toward confrontation
In April 2026, Sanders led resolutions seeking to block roughly $450 million in military sales to Israel, including bombs and bulldozers. Reuters reported that both measures failed, but they drew significant Democratic support and were framed by Sanders around U.S. arms law and civilian harm.
That position is materially different from unconditional support for military aid. Sanders has increasingly argued that U.S. leverage should be used to restrict weapons transfers when he believes recipients violate humanitarian or human-rights standards.
But Sanders is still a reformer inside the U.S. security state
His broader record is not pacifist. Sanders supported some U.S. military actions and has not campaigned for the abolition of NATO or the dismantling of the U.S. military alliance system. His politics seek to condition and redirect American power rather than abolish the strategic institutions through which that power is exercised.
The Marxist question is the institution, not the personality
A Marxist critique therefore asks what room any progressive senator has inside a state whose military budget, alliances, arms industry and executive powers are deeply institutionalized. Sanders can contest individual weapons sales and wars while still operating inside structures designed to project U.S. power globally.
That makes Sanders politically significant precisely because he reveals the boundary between progressive reform and anti-imperialist transformation. His record shows that the two are not the same thing.
