There’s something especially pathetic about watching a man draped in postmodern Eastern mysticism and faux-anti-imperial gravitas melt into the reactionary swamp of Trumpist and NATO apologism. Alexander Dugin—longtime Russian ideologue, mystic nationalist, and alleged “Putin’s brain”—recently took to social media to suggest that the Azov Battalion, NATO, and the CIA are behind the recent protests in Los Angeles. Yes, really. According to this bearded geopolitical astrologer, a working-class uprising in the belly of the empire is actually a NATO false flag against… itself?

It’d be laughable if it weren’t so revealing.

Let’s get one thing straight: if you see a protest in the US—especially one targeting police brutality, economic inequality, or genocidal foreign policy—it’s not the CIA. It’s the people. Suggesting otherwise isn’t edgy geopolitical analysis; it’s warmed-over Cold War brain fog. It’s the same kind of paranoid slop that used to label every Black liberation movement a Kremlin op. Only now it’s been flipped: working-class rage is dismissed as a Western psy-op, while actual NATO-aligned fascists in Ukraine are bizarrely absolved to curry favor with MAGA.

Let’s not forget: Dugin and his circle spent years building up an image as anti-NATO, anti-globalist, multipolar visionaries. But when push came to shove—when real anti-imperial movements began stirring in the core capitalist countries—they bent the knee to Trump, a man who claimed he’d end the Ukraine war, only to funnel more weapons into the Nazi-adjacent forces of the Ukrainian far right. The same Trump who cuddled with Erik Prince and John Bolton, who greenlit weapons sales to Ukraine and presided over escalated NATO deployments on Russia’s borders.

And Dugin? He salivated. He cheered Trump as a “multipolar disruptor,” ignoring the material fact that under Trump, NATO’s budget ballooned and the US military footprint increased. He swallowed the PR line while people died.

What’s even dumber is the circular logic of Dugin’s latest claim. If NATO controls Azov, and NATO funds the CIA, and the CIA creates unrest in LA, then… NATO is attacking its own core power base? The US is destabilizing itself to… what? Justify more funding for a war it’s already fighting? The ouroboros of conspiracy turns into mush. And behind the mysticism and LARPing is the grim truth: Dugin, like many so-called “anti-imperialists,” is just another reactionary who’d rather flatter white ethno-nationalist strongmen than engage in material analysis. This idealist nonsense not anti-imperialist.

Let Dugin chant to the stars and the gods. History is made in the streets.
