ICE Shoots New Yorker With Child in Car; Mamdani Says 'Abolish ICE'

An ICE agent shot and wounded a New Yorker in his car in Marble Hill on Thursday, October 8, with a five-year-old child inside the vehicle. Mayor Zohran Mamdani said early reports indicated agents surrounded the car and fired multiple rounds. The child was believed to be physically unharmed.

Federal officials described the shooting as taking place during a targeted immigration enforcement operation. The Department of Homeland Security said agents had been seeking the driver and that he received medical assistance after being injured. Why the officer opened fire remains the central unresolved question.

Speaking as mayor of a city built by immigrant workers, Mamdani condemned the operation and demanded that President Donald Trump end ICE enforcement actions in New York. His statement concluded with an unambiguous call: 'Abolish ICE.' Governor Kathy Hochul also called for a transparent investigation.

The shooting in a residential neighborhood raises fundamental questions about state power. Armed federal agents operate among homes, schools and workplaces, while the families who live there face the risk. Any serious account of public safety has to include the people threatened by the operation, not merely the agency carrying it out.

A credible investigation must establish the sequence of events, the legal justification for using a firearm and whether body-camera footage exists. The mayor's account and the federal description should not be confused with a completed independent investigation.
