Chile copper strike deepens as workers reject unequal benefits

Workers at Chile's Centinela copper mine are refusing to abandon their collective bargaining demands after talks with Antofagasta Minerals failed to produce a breakthrough. The strike by the Distrito Centinela and Minera Esperanza unions began on October 7, and union representatives said negotiations remained deadlocked on October 15.
The two unions represent more than 700 workers. They have made the demand for equal treatment central to their fight, arguing that benefits should not depend on which union an employee belongs to. Three workers have now undertaken a hunger strike, according to union representatives cited by Reuters.
The standoff matters beyond a single workplace. Chile is the world's largest copper producer, and the metal underpins electrical infrastructure, public transport and the global energy transition. The labor required to keep that supply moving is too often pushed to the margins of conversations dominated by output forecasts and share prices.
Whose terms govern the mine?
The unions say members operate a large share of Centinela's heavy equipment and maintenance systems. In earlier remarks, the workers' representatives said the walkout had cut truck activity substantially and could have a more pronounced impact on output if negotiations remained unresolved.

Antofagasta Minerals has emphasized that the strikers account for a minority of the full workforce. That distinction is numerically relevant, but it does not settle whether the company's compensation rules are fair or whether the workers' bargaining demands merit concessions.
The broader battle is about who captures value from high-priced mineral exports. Workers perform dangerous, highly skilled work; shareholders and executives receive the lion's share of attention when copper prices rise. The unions are insisting that productive power must translate into bargaining power.
A negotiated settlement remains possible. For now, the central fact is that Chilean miners have held their line and voluntary mediation has not closed the gap.
