PARIS — A student revolt over overcrowded schools and missing teachers has grown into a nationwide challenge to France’s economic priorities. On Saturday, October 17, students, workers, trade unionists and Yellow Vest demonstrators marched against the rising cost of living and deteriorating public services.

The CGT trade union estimated that 800,000 people joined the demonstrations. France’s Interior Ministry had not provided a comparable national turnout estimate when Reuters reported the protests. The ministry said at least 272 people were arrested amid clashes in cities including Paris, Marseille, Toulouse, Angers and Lyon.

Police used tear gas as parts of the marches turned confrontational. Protesters said that most participants marched peacefully and blamed some of the destruction on groups seeking clashes. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu condemned the violence and accused far-left groups and criminals of exploiting the movement.

The protests began in September at high schools in working-class northern suburbs of Paris. Students complained that teacher shortages, decaying facilities and unequal funding were depriving them of the education they were promised. Their demands have since drawn in workers and families struggling with fuel prices, housing costs and strained public provision.

The movement has crossed borders. Demonstrations over living costs and education took place in Belgium, Italy and Portugal, while Albanian protesters also mobilized against corruption and poor opportunities. The grievances differ, but the pressure on public institutions is shared.

France’s political leadership faces a choice larger than policing the next march: treat understaffed schools and household hardship as budget lines to contain, or address the material demands that brought young people and unions into the streets together.
